let the magic begin with an interactive holiday card idea from audrey pettit that will have you literally “spinning” with ideas…

supplies:

  • inks: Distress Ink/Picket Fence/Brushed Corduroy
  • paints: Distress Paint/Picket Fence
  • surfaces: Paper Stash/Tidings; Deco Sheets/Holiday; Kraft Cardstock; Distress Watercolor Cardstock
  • embellishments: Ephemera/Festive; Jute String/Christmas; Distress Glitter Dust/Vintage Platinum
  • adhesive: Multi-Medium
  • tools: Craft Sheet; Mini Ink Blending Tool; Scissors; Tiny Attacher
  • sizzix: Bigz/Enchanted Doves; Thinlits/Stitched Rectangles; Texture Fade/Tiny Dots; Vagabond 2
  • misc: Therm O Web Fleece; Signo White Pen; Gold Twine

gueststeps1_4Step 1: Create a side-folding A2-sized card base from white cardstock. Cut a 4.25”x5.5” piece of kraft cardstock to fit the front of the card. Select the second largest rectangle die from the Stitched Rectangles Framelits set, and die cut the shape from the center of both the card base and the kraft cardstock. (tip: line up the kraft cardstock on top of the card front, secure with a bit of washi or post-it tape, and run them through the die cutting machine at the same time.)

Step 2: Emboss the kraft frame with the new Tiny Dots embossing folder. Brush a Picket Fence Distress ink pad over the raised embossed design, and along the edges of the frame. Adhere the frame to the card base using a strong adhesive.

Step 3: Nestle the largest and second largest stitched rectangle die together, and secure them with a bit of washi tape to hold them in place. Die cut the frame from a piece of red Deco Sheet.

Step 4: Peel off the backing from the Deco Sheet frame, and place it onto the front of the card. Cut a 4.25”x5.5” piece of Tidings paper and adhere it to the inside back of the card. Add a die cut ephemera sentiment to the top left corner of the back flap of the card base. Swipe Picket Fence Distress ink over the die cut, and blend Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink onto the edges of the card (both inside and out) using an ink blending tool.

gueststeps5_8Step 5: For the interactive, spinner portion of the card design, you will need to die cut four of the larger dove shapes from the Enchanted Doves Bigz Die. Die cut two shapes from white cardstock, one shape from patterned paper, and one shape from fleece. The patterned paper dove needs to be the reverse image of the fleece dove, so whatever patterned paper you want to use, be sure to place it face down onto the die when die cutting.

Step 6: Adhere the fleece dove onto one of the cardstock shapes using Ranger Multi Medium Matte. Adhere the patterned paper dove onto the second cardstock shape. Note* these two doves need to be mirror images of each other.

Step 7: Dab Picket Fence Distress Paint onto the fleece dove.

Step 8: And while the paint is still wet, sprinkle Distress Glitter Dust onto the dove. Tap off the excess, and set the bird aside to dry.

gueststeps9_12Step 9: To adhere the spinner, place a strip of strong adhesive down the backside of one of the dove shapes, and place a long piece of cord or twine onto the tape. Cover the backside of the second shape with Multi Medium Matte, and adhere it to the first bird, sandwiching the cord in between the two birds.

Step 10: Place the bird into the frame opening and space it so that all parts of the dove can spin freely in the frame. Place strong adhesive onto the backside of the frame opening on both the top and bottom, and press the ends of the cord into the adhesive. Don’t worry about the excess, as we’ll cut that off in a bit.

Step 11: Cut a 4.25”x5.5” piece of heavyweight watercolor cardstock, and die cut the second largest Stitched Rectangle from the center, lining up the opening to match the card front. Cover the back of the frame with Multi Medium Matte, and adhere it to the backside of the card front, hiding the ends of the cord. Trim off the excess cord.

Step 12: Tie additional cord around the dove’s neck and tie into a small bow. Dab Picket Fence Distress Paint onto the cord to give it some age. Add additional die cut ephemera pieces to the card frame. Dress them up with a bit of glitter, and a Tiny Attacher staple.

Wind up the dove before closing the card and placing it into your envelope. Your recipient will have such a fun surprise when they open the card and the dove begins to spin!
