surprise new york trip…

hey bloggers – hope you’re enjoying your week. no doubt many of you are busy getting ready for the thanksgiving holiday weekend.  i just wanted to share some highlights from a surprise visit to new york last week.  saturday morning we left ranger and headed to the airport to catch our flight home.  we returned the rental car like normal, but instead of going to the terminal, a car pulled up and mario said “get in…we’re going to the city”.  i was so excited i couldn’t believe it!  we’re going to new york?  for how long?  he said he wanted to surprise me with a weekend in the city since he knows how much inspiration i get from being there and visiting my favorite shops, and seeing the city all decked out for the holiday season – incredible…

we arrived in time square, checked into our hotel, and immediately hit the streets to head to our first (and most important) destination in new york city – tinsel trading company.  my friend marcia who is the owner of tinsel trading company happened to be there as well so i was happy to get to see her.  i absolutely love this place, filled to the brim with vintage findings, trims, and treasures.  i shopped for quite a while (heck i could have been there all day) and while we were there, mario got a text from our friend debby schuh who happened to also be in the city for her annual holiday event and teaching at tinsel that night – crazy huh?  we waited for her to get there to say hello, and then we were off again to explore more of the city…

of course one of the best things about new york is the food and we definitely took advantage of that.  from starbucks on just about every corner, pizza shops everywhere you look, and loads of bakeries and cupcake shops, it was all amazing.  our favorite place to eat in the city is right off times square at a diner called juniors – seriously some of the best food and cheesecake ever (you can tell how excited mario was to be there too)!  that night, we were lucky enough to get last minute tickets to see wicked on broadway so our adventure just kept getting better and better.  this was our 4th time seeing wicked, but first time to see it on broadway and it was definitely the best one yet…

the next day on sunday we set out early to the hells kitchen flea market where i found loads of vintage ephemera, photos, and several little antique trinkets to take home in my suitcase.  then we were off to walk through the city and then stopped at one of my favorite candy stores dylan’s candy bar.  i’m telling you it’s really like stepping into wonka with 3 floors of nothing but candy, life sized treats everywhere, and even the floor is filled with candy – insane!  next we walked through central park, checked out the windows at anthropologie (always great inspiration), and stopped by rockefeller center to see them decorating the massive christmas tree for the annual lighting next week.  while we were there i picked up a piece from one of  branches trimmed off the tree to put in my travel journal – love that…

i must say new york city should definitely be a must do on everyone’s bucket list, there is simply no other place like it in the world.  what a great way to end our travel year – thanks mario for this great surprise to fill my soul with ideas and inspiration, i needed it…t!m
