new jumbo tattered florals & more from sizzix…

some exciting news to share with all of you today!  sizzix is pre-releasing three of the new dies i designed for cha-2014 and will be shipping later this month (so you can pre-order them at your local retailer).  with the huge popularity and success of the original tattered floral bigz die, i approached sizzix about creating a jumbo version that is simply perfect for home decor projects, mixed media, and much more.  i’m thrilled with this new jumbo tattered florals bigz xl die, the complimenting garden greens bigz die, and the spring greenery decorative strip die.  together these dies allow even more creative possibilities to use with the original tattered floral die – get ready to be inspired…

back in february, i held a tattered floral challenge here on the blog and the ideas shared by many of you were amazing,  check out the original post here .  now check out this new die: i want to show you a comparison of the new jumbo tattered florals bigz xl die (left), and the original bigz tattered floral die (right) – we’re talking jumbo!

my friend debi adams from sizzix created this wonderful video introducing the new jumbo tattered floral die along with sharing some great creative ideas for making shabby chic decor with these new dies…

today i’ve created a quick tutorial for making a layered tattered flower using grungepaper, tissue wrap, and my eclectic elements fabric for a great home accent  – here we go…

DSC073121. run a piece of grungepaper through your xyron to apply permanent adhesive to one side.

DSC073132. apply a sheet of tissue wrap over the adhesive side of the grungepaper.

DSC073143. die cut using the jumbo tattered florals die (love the random look of using tissue wrap).

DSC073164. i also die cut some burlap leaves from the jumbo tattered floral die.

DSC073205. colorize the die cut grunge and burlap pieces using distress paint, and wipe away the excess paint.

DSC073216. ink the edges of the painted grunge pieces with distress ink using an ink blending tool.

DSC073227. my favorite thing to do with grungepaper is to shape it by simply rolling the petals with your fingers.  grungepaper is pliable yet will hold it’s shape.

DSC073238. repeat for all grunge pieces to give dimension to the finished flower.

DSC073179. next die cut two stacked layers of fabric through the jump tattered floral die (great for cutting fabrics).

DSC0731810. i wanted a more distressed looking finish to my flowers so i like to use my scratch tool from tonic around the edges of the pieces.  by placing the die cut fabric on a piece of scrap paper and scratching the edges it creates the perfect frayed edge.

DSC0731911. repeat for all die cut fabric pieces, great effect isn’t it?

DSC0731512. for an added accent, i die cut the garden greens using recycled cardboard (more on that later).

DSC0733013. begin stacking various layers working with the largest flower as the base and adhere all layers with a hot glue gun.

DSC0733214. when working with the fabrics, i like scrunching the center into the hot glue to create ruffles.

DSC0733315. continue with the remaining flower pieces and notice how the grungepaper keeps it’s shape and add dimension to the layers.

DSC0733416. finish by gluing the burlap leaves and cut cardboard shapes in between the layers (even though this is going on a pillow, the flower is removable so i won’t be washing it which is why cardboard and burlap works for me) the grungepaper is completely washable.  adhere a vintage button in the center and that’s it.

DSC07328the details: the finished size of this new jumbo tattered floral is 5″ wide – wow.

DSC07326the details: i attached the flower to a pillow using a safety pin so it’s easily removable – simple and so very cool.

what a great way to use a variety of materials to create these jumbo flowers and use them on a lots of different projects.  i have a feeling these dies are going to be new favorites for many of you so be sure to pre-order them from your favorite local retailer or click the links at the bottom of this post.  remember these new dies will be shipping later this month (you won’t have to wait until cha!).  now for even more great ideas and inspiration head over to the sizzix blog and see what their design team has created with these new dies – thanks sizzix…t!m
